WrenchDesk vs general accounting software for a garage

General accounting software is good at what it's for: ledgers, invoices, VAT returns, the accountant's month-end. A workshop also needs everything that happens before the invoice, and that's where general software has nothing to offer.

What accounting software does well

  • Double-entry books, bank reconciliation and statutory reports.
  • Invoices and VAT returns that an accountant already knows how to check.
  • Integrations with banks and payroll providers.

What a workshop needs that it doesn't have

  • The car. Plate, VIN, mileage, history, the driver and the fleet it belongs to.
  • The job. Intake with photos and fuel level, an inspection checklist, labour from your own rates, the technician doing it, "waiting for parts", and the gate pass on the way out.
  • The estimate before the invoice, sent to the customer and approved from their phone, line by line.
  • The workshop floor. A board of every car by stage, bays, appointments and online booking.
  • The customer conversation, with WhatsApp answered at any hour, reminders when a service is due, and a link to follow the car.
  • Workshop numbers. Profit per job, per technician and per service, not only per account.

Using both

Many owners keep their accountant on the software they already use. WrenchDesk runs the workshop and produces the invoices, the payments, the expenses and the VAT figures, and every list exports to Excel or CSV for the accountant to bring across. WrenchDesk has no direct connection to QuickBooks, Odoo, Zoho or similar products.
